Serbia comes in from the Cold

For the first time since hardman Slobodan Milosevic was overthrown in 2000 after a decade of war, the main political forces in Serbia’s presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday have the same goal – membership of the European Union.
“These elections are a major civilisational step forward for Serbia,” says Jovan Kovacic, head of Belgrade’s East-West Bridge think-tank.

“They are the first where there is no talk of blood, sweat and tears, or recapturing our lost lands. Vengeance is not an issue. Kosovo is not an issue.”
Milica Delevic, a candidate for the ruling Democratic party, adds: “There are three national elections on May 6, in France, Greece and Serbia – and we are the ones who are most positive about Europe.”
